- Oakdale - Carol Ann (Finch) MacPherson, 75, of Oakdale passed away Jan. 30, 2022, with her beloved husband of 29 years, John, by her side and surrounded by her family. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Carol was born July 21, 1946, in Endicott, N.Y., the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (McAleer) Finch and the youngest of six children. Orphaned at an early age, she was jointly raised by her older brothers and sisters, growing up with her many nieces and nephews as siblings. She spent her early life between southeastern Connecticut and upstate New York. She attended local schools and graduated from Waterford High School in 1964. She made her home on Oxoboxo Lake in Oakdale for the last 22 years, where she could often be found enjoying a cup of coffee on her deck, taking in the beauty and serenity of the lake she loved.
Carol married her soulmate, John, in 1992. They loved each other deeply and spent the best years of their lives together. They traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and enjoyed their summers on the lake and riding motorcycles. And perhaps most precious to Carol, they loved spending time with their grandchildren. John was a constant source of strength and support as her health declined over the last several years, and she loved him with all her heart.
Carol held many jobs during her lifetime, but eventually settled into a career as a drug and alcohol counselor. She worked for several social services and recovery agencies locally and retired from the City of Norwich Social Services Department in 2007.
Carol was a grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous with 36 years of sobriety. AA was a central part of her life, and she was a respected woman within the community, to whom many turned for support, encouragement, and love. She was a firm believer in the power of the program to help those struggling with addiction and was happy to share her experience, strength, and hope. She will be greatly missed by her many friends in AA.
In addition to her beloved husband, Carol is survived by her children, MaryAnn Fitzsimmons, Dr. Raymond Lawrence and his wife Ina, Dawn Bussiere and her husband Dr. James Bussiere; and her stepchildren, Christina Sherman and her husband Max, and Danae Poppie and her husband Kevin. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jonathan Henk and Corinne (Henk) Jojic and her husband Vladimir; Kalyani and Karishma Lawrence; Mason, Skye and Xander Bussiere; Matthew Shafer; Levi and Grace Sherman; Selena Berard and her husband Sean Doran: Seraphim, Skyler and Shawn Poppie; and her great-grandson Ahmari Shafer. She is also survived by her sisters, Genevieve (Johnnie) Giordani and Irene Padbury; her sister-in-law and surrogate mom Leone Finch; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Charlie Fitzsimmons; her brothers, Joseph, Robert and Bruce Finch; and her second surrogate mom and sister-in-law Madeline Finch.
