- George J. Rainville, 90, of 550 College St., Lewiston, died Sunday, Oct. 31, at Ouellette's Adult Foster Care, following a long illness. He was born in Lowell, Mass., Oct. 11, 1920, the son of Joseph and Emma Bernier Rainville. He was educated in Lowell schools until 12 years old. He then attended St. Peter's in Lewiston. He graduated from Robert's Business College in June 1938. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Eighth Air Force in Europe. On July 3, 1946, he married Lauretta Bussiere and they made their home in Lewiston. He was employed for many years as office manager at Jewett Ford in Lewiston. In 1964, he started work for the State of Maine Bureau of Taxation. In 1965, he transferred to the Maine Department of Audit as a staff auditor. On July 1, 1977, he was elected by the Maine Legislature to serve as the state auditor, he was re-elected in 1980 by unanimous vote of the entire State Legislature. He held this position until his retirement in 1985. A member of Holy Cross Church, Prince of Peace Parish, he was also active in the American Legion, Post 210 and the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his loving wife of Lewiston; two sons, Robert and wife, Karen, of Lewiston and Roger and wife, Suzanne, of Lewiston; four grandchildren, Cynthia and husband, James Gahagan, John Rainville, Amy Tremblay and Joseph Rainville; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ella Gahagan and Chloe and David Tremblay. The family thanks Ron and the staff of Ouellette's Adult Foster Home for the loving care they gave George during his final illness.
